My Approach
Designing Cohesion by Activating Difference
My approach begins with my own journey. I grew up in a low-income Black family and later moved through institutions from elite universities to high-status organizations that were not always structured with my belonging in mind. Those experiences taught me that difference is never just about identity; it is about structure, culture, and power. They also showed me that cohesion cannot be assumed. It has to be designed.

As a sociologist and practitioner-scholar, I study and shape how organizations work: how they define identity, exercise power, and include or exclude difference. My work combines research insight with practical strategy to help leaders and communities build environments where difference is not only present but activated as a source of strength.

Cohesion is Strategic
Cohesion is not accidental. Every choice an organization makes about structures, processes, culture, and leadership either includes or excludes difference. Designing for cohesion means recognizing that inclusion is not just moral or symbolic; it is strategic. Organizations that integrate difference effectively are better equipped to adapt, innovate, and endure.
This requires contextual learning, thoughtful experimentation, and adaptive execution. Cohesion is not assimilation. It is an intentional practice of integration where difference fuels resilience and collective capacity.

Inclusion Builds Capacity
One-size-fits-all approaches fail in a plural world. Designing cohesion means paying attention to how different people experience the same environment, how tensions surface, and how conflicts are navigated.

Conflict and tension are not breakdowns. They are signals of translation and integration at work. Cohesion does not erase difference. It leverages it so that varied voices and perspectives contribute to shared success. When done well, organizations do not just include people. They create enabling environments where people belong without erasure.
